Please Mister Please / Jet Plane
This outrageous piece of work deliberately harmonizes parts of the melody of the Olivia Newton-John song, Please Mister Please, with parts of the melody of the John Denver song, Leaving on a Jet Plane. The effect is quite lovely, actually, except if you know both melodies you may keep getting the feeling you're not in Kansas any more. And at 1:57, it’s over before you can find your feet.
But even in two minutes you can tell that the melodies marry quite nicely as they are brought together in a chamber music environment of three cyber-guitars, piano, electric bass and two cellos. The secret, of course, is that the two different songs have nearly identical chord patterns. This happens quite often in popular music, producing many opportunities for marrying two popular melodies. Hey, this could start a trend! Mixing and matching old chestnuts … a new kind of polyphonic blues.
