Perfume of the Night-Blooming Jasmine
I improvised this sweet-smelling piece on Sept. 19, 2008, in a deliberate attempt to repeat the effect I had produced in Pillow Talk. It didn’t work, but Perfume of the Night-Blooming Jasmine has its own character, similar to Pillow Talk but somewhat more complex, running longer and finding more to say about its theme, but still without quite the effect of clean simplicity produced in Pillow Talk. Improvising the same piece twice is like trying to put your foot in the same river twice. It can’t be done!
There are no words, but if you know the smell of night-blooming jasmine, you know what energy the music draws upon.
